Observing a 4* training run by Phil Clegg...

Treardurr Bay is a good spot for surfing... and for swimming as weel!
The weather forecast said snow and westerly wind force 5. James has already told me to wear something very warm so yesterday I arrived at the 4 star training with Phil Clegg wearing three underlayes and three pair of socks. I also putted on two hats and gloves AND puggies! It's never ever too much for an Italian lady in the tipical Welsh weather!
We had unexpected sun at lunch time but also unexpeted swim at the end of the day. I swam into the surf spot at Treardurr Bay! It was a very special way to celebrate my first month here in Wales and I was really extremely surprised... by the water temperature: not so bad, at the end!
Today we had wind force 6 gusting 9 (!) so we went to the Menai Straith to practise some more leardership with the two sea kayaker leader trainee Josh and Kristoffer... We all suffered the low temperature due to the windchill but we all appreciated a lot the ferry glides we made several times to cross the strait (simply following Phil's boat!). We expecially enjoied the brief stop in the garden of the white house on the Ynys Goned Goch, exactly in the hearth of the Swellies!

p.s. I wasn't sure to mentioned it, but when I found the picture on his facebook page, than I decided to update my blog with it (last picture!). Last Saturday Phil started the personal skills session saying "don't worry too much about the boat" and I appreciated it a lot! At the end of the day, Kristoffer took a video of his buddy paddler Josh while he was running a big-big wave in Treardurr Bay... Josh swam (as I did bit later, but not on the same wave!) and the kayak crashed onto the rocks but had just few damages (some scratches and a little hole on the back hull), while Johs had an extra adrenaline dose and an interesting story to tell!

Paddler's Return pub: first meeting with cappuccino and americano!
Treardurr bay on a windy day: the best start for the 4* training!
There's not the perfect tow-line... but have a discussion about it!
Rescues, self-rescues, rock landing and some more fun!
De-briefing and tidal planning in the Swellies for the day after...
Sunday lunch break in a very special garden...
Watching for the best water line between the tidals....
Big tidal range: high water on the footpath...
P.s. Kristoffer had his go-pro on when Josh run The Wave!

Two more days observing James Stevenson...

I was so lucky to spent two more days observing James Stevenson coaching Helen and Simone, two paddlers coming from Surrey (near London) and looking in rough water boat handling.
The first day (last Thursday, February 19) we went in the Menai Strait, practising lots of edging, ferry glides, breaking in and breaking out the corrent... It was a very good chance for me to refresh my first tidal race course I had some years ago in the same location, a perfect spot between the bridges and around the Swellies... I enjoy the session very much, despite the bad rainy and windy weather!
The second day (today Friday, February 20) we went to Roscolyn. In the car parking we met a lot of local paddlers, Stephen and Mirko, Roger and his friend, Phil and his group, everybody started from the same beach but suddenly desappeared along the coast line. James asked the team to practise interesting exercises about inside and outside edge, sweep stroke and sculling, bow rudder and more... and than we spent the afternoon paddling up and down the tidal race around the Roscolyn beacon. I so appreciated one more time James' coaching style and in addition to all that brilliant staff I was favourably impressed by Helen's high motivation, when she tried twice (and successed twice!) rolling in that very very very chilly water!!!

Menai Strait slipway at high water - very different from the low water here :-)
Reading the texture of the water to better understand how to go with the flow
Coaching around the Swellies is challenging and interesting!
Lot of breaking in and breaking out...
Second day at Roscolyn bay... with lots of ray's eggs :-)
Ohhh, I love bobbles!!!
Helen and Simon reached my heart with all those chocolate cakes!

Kayaking the Aleutians

The new adventure film made by Justine Curgenven is finally release!
The first review written by Simon Willis was very interesting and made me very curious to watch the video as soon as possible. There will be a night show organized by the Llanberis Mountain Film Festival at the Surf-Lines base and I was thinking on book a ticket for next Sunday March 8th... but last week I met Justine at Port Dafarch and at the end of the daily paddle she was so kind to give me a copy as a gift!
Now DVD orders are finally shipping and I can write two words about it: simply unbelivable!
I've watched it siting on a comfy sofa with Debbie, my flat mate, and we couldn't stopped to cry out lots of ohhhh and ahhhh and noooo and wow!!! There are black bears, strong winds and unpredictable corrents. The film is really unbeliveable, you must see and re-see it several times!

There is a moment I will not forget anymore, when the back zip of Sarah's dry-suit broken, exactly during one of the several pee stop on the ocean! Yesterday Justine showed me how did they do the balancing and challenging manouver and I was really very impressed about it!
On the back of the DVD is written the best resume ever of this kayaking adventure: "No one has succeeded in kayaking the lenght of the remote and stormy Aleutioan Islands, which stretch from Russia to Alaska. Explorers Justine Curgenver and Sarh Outen set out to paddle 2,500 kilometers along the archipelago to the nearest road confronting more than 20 long crossings, which separate the tiny unpopulated islands. Sarah faces an even more formidable challenge as this is part of her round-the-world human-powered journey and she has limited kayaking experience. Alone for 101 days in one of the windiest, roughest places o earth, ther two women are swept away from land by unknown currents, pounded by rough seas and approached by bears. Experiencing an edge-of-your-seat journey, they gain a rare insight into themselves, the rich wildlfie and the lives of the few people who live in this harsh yet beautiful landscape".
The DVD includes a 55-minute film festival version and a 70-minute Directors Cut, plus four bonus films, including surfing at Tofino, Vancouver Island with Hurricane Riders, kayaking with whales in the Bay of Fundy and a stormy downwind paddle in Wales: the last short film is in my opinion the best one of four and it was realized on December 2013 in the Menai Strait - Anglesey, during an unforgettable downwind paddle in a wind force 8 gusting 10! Unbeliveable, Justine shouts!
Unbelivable is also the long crossing she made with Sarah Outen along the Aleutians!

Unbeliveable indeed!
Order you copy on Cackle Tv web-site here or by Tatiyak sending me an e-mail (I will bring some copies of the DVD to the Pagaia Symposium in Llança if you join it!).

Windy day on the North coast of Anglesey

Yesterday night I received a message from Justine: "Hope there is any surf at Treardurr Bay, otherwise we can all meet up at Bull Bay. Tomorrow at 10 a.m. I call you to let you know which one". Good plan, I was really very happy to join again a group of very strong paddlers: Justine Curgenven, Barry Shaw and Stephen Miles (who just passed his Level 2 Coach assessment last Sunday - YUPPY!)
When I woke up this morning I had a bit headache and a new pain on my left shoulder. Above all, outside of the window was cloudy and rainy and really very windy! I thought was the wrong day to go paddling but... there is always a but! Justine and Barry are so kind to borrowed me one of their kayaks (I left the NDK Romany at the Adventure Elements base, where I will come back tomorrow to observe James Stevenson again!) so I have no excuse at all! Let's go paddling, than!

Was a very windy day. The weather forecast said westerly wind force 5. We had offshore wind force 6 gusting 7 on the North coast of Anglesey today. The perfect condition to explore the rocky cliffs and some caves between Bull Bay and Porth Wen. Once we launched the kayaks from the little slipway in the Bull Bay, Barry showed me a couple of little dolphines and he tried to teach me the English name but I was not able to remember it for longer... We had a short paddle (just 11 km) in a very strong offshore wind (back wind, head wind and side wind too!) and a quick lunch break in a peabble beach not far away from Port Wen. Once back, Justine showed me how rafted two kayaks to be able to have a pee stop during the navigation, as she had to do several times with Sarh Outen during their Aleutians expedition...
Well, was a very funny and amazing daily paddle and once at home I realized that both my headache and shoulder pain were completely desappeared. It really means that kayak is a good medicine!

Ready to start...
Justine exploring the cave (the exit is closed at low water!)
Stephen Miles smiling at the camera: a newest happy Level 2 Coach on the ocean!
Brick works at Poth Wen: it's amazing, isn't it?
Thank you so much, Barry, for this picture of me crossing the windy Porth Wen bay...
On the way back home, I visited a disused coppermine...
... and found some interesting sculptures exploring the inland!
Ieri sera ho ricevuto un messaggio di Justine: "Speriamo di fare surf a Treasdurr Bay, altrimenti ci incontriamo a Bull Bay. Domani alle 10. Ti chiamo per dirti se l'una o l'altra".
Bel programma.
