Two more days observing James Stevenson...

I was so lucky to spent two more days observing James Stevenson coaching Helen and Simone, two paddlers coming from Surrey (near London) and looking in rough water boat handling.
The first day (last Thursday, February 19) we went in the Menai Strait, practising lots of edging, ferry glides, breaking in and breaking out the corrent... It was a very good chance for me to refresh my first tidal race course I had some years ago in the same location, a perfect spot between the bridges and around the Swellies... I enjoy the session very much, despite the bad rainy and windy weather!
The second day (today Friday, February 20) we went to Roscolyn. In the car parking we met a lot of local paddlers, Stephen and Mirko, Roger and his friend, Phil and his group, everybody started from the same beach but suddenly desappeared along the coast line. James asked the team to practise interesting exercises about inside and outside edge, sweep stroke and sculling, bow rudder and more... and than we spent the afternoon paddling up and down the tidal race around the Roscolyn beacon. I so appreciated one more time James' coaching style and in addition to all that brilliant staff I was favourably impressed by Helen's high motivation, when she tried twice (and successed twice!) rolling in that very very very chilly water!!!

Ho avuto la fortuna di seguire James Stevenson per altri due giorni e di osservare il suo corso con Helen e Simon, due kayaker arrivati dal Surrey (vicino Londra) per migliorare la tecnica di conduzione dell'imbarcazione in mare mossa.
Il primo giorno (giovedì scorso 19 febbraio) abbiamo praticato inclinazioni, entrate in corrente ed in morta e traghetti nel Menai Strait. Ho così rinfrescato il corso di tanti anni fa sulle tidal races nello stesso luogo di allora, un luogo perfetto tra i due ponti sullo stretto e le suggestive Isole Swellies... Mi sono divertita un sacco, nonostante il brutto tempo, piovigginoso e ventoso oltre misura!
Il secondo giorno (oggi venerdì 20 febbraio) siamo andati a Roscolyn. Nel parcheggio antistante la spiaggia abbiamo incontrato tutti, Stephen e Mirko, Roger ed un suo amico, Phil ed il suo gruppo, tutti pronti a partire dalla stessa spiaggia ma tutti presto spariti in mare, volutamente dispersi lungo una costa frastagliata che nasconde i kayak alla vista anche più acuta. James ha proposto degli esercizi molto interessanti sull'inclinazione interna ed esterna dello scafo, sulla pagaiata circolare e sugli appoggi, oltre che sul timone di prua e molto altro... nel pomeriggio ci siamo divertiti a pagaiare su e giù lungo la tidal race intorno alla meda degli isolotti di Roscolyn. Ho così apprezzato una volta di più lo stile di James, un gran bravo insegnante - uno dei miei preferiti, e sono rimasta favorevolmente colpita dalla volontà di Helen, che a fine giornata si è sempre cimentata (con successo!) nell'esecuzione del rolling... in un'acqua gelata da non credere!!!
