Kayaking the Aleutians

The new adventure film made by Justine Curgenven is finally release!
The first review written by Simon Willis was very interesting and made me very curious to watch the video as soon as possible. There will be a night show organized by the Llanberis Mountain Film Festival at the Surf-Lines base and I was thinking on book a ticket for next Sunday March 8th... but last week I met Justine at Port Dafarch and at the end of the daily paddle she was so kind to give me a copy as a gift!
Now DVD orders are finally shipping and I can write two words about it: simply unbelivable!
I've watched it siting on a comfy sofa with Debbie, my flat mate, and we couldn't stopped to cry out lots of ohhhh and ahhhh and noooo and wow!!! There are black bears, strong winds and unpredictable corrents. The film is really unbeliveable, you must see and re-see it several times!
There is a moment I will not forget anymore, when the back zip of Sarah's dry-suit broken, exactly during one of the several pee stop on the ocean! Yesterday Justine showed me how did they do the balancing and challenging manouver and I was really very impressed about it!
On the back of the DVD is written the best resume ever of this kayaking adventure: "No one has succeeded in kayaking the lenght of the remote and stormy Aleutioan Islands, which stretch from Russia to Alaska. Explorers Justine Curgenver and Sarh Outen set out to paddle 2,500 kilometers along the archipelago to the nearest road confronting more than 20 long crossings, which separate the tiny unpopulated islands. Sarah faces an even more formidable challenge as this is part of her round-the-world human-powered journey and she has limited kayaking experience. Alone for 101 days in one of the windiest, roughest places o earth, ther two women are swept away from land by unknown currents, pounded by rough seas and approached by bears. Experiencing an edge-of-your-seat journey, they gain a rare insight into themselves, the rich wildlfie and the lives of the few people who live in this harsh yet beautiful landscape".
The DVD includes a 55-minute film festival version and a 70-minute Directors Cut, plus four bonus films, including surfing at Tofino, Vancouver Island with Hurricane Riders, kayaking with whales in the Bay of Fundy and a stormy downwind paddle in Wales: the last short film is in my opinion the best one of four and it was realized on December 2013 in the Menai Strait - Anglesey, during an unforgettable downwind paddle in a wind force 8 gusting 10! Unbeliveable, Justine shouts!
Unbelivable is also the long crossing she made with Sarah Outen along the Aleutians!

La prima recensione scritta da Simon Willis (l'autore dei filmati didattici di Gordon Brown) è stata talmente interessante da farmi crescere la voglia di vedere il film quanto prima. Avevo letto di una serata organizzata dal Llanberis Mountain Film Festival al centro Surf-Lines ed avevo pensato di prenotare subito un biglietto per la proiezione di domenica 8 marzo ma... la scorsa settimana ho pagaiato con Justine e a fine giornata è stata così carina da regalarmi una copia del DVD!
Ora che la promozione è ufficialmente iniziata e che Justine riscuote i primi premi internazionali, posso scrivere anch'io due parole sul suo ultimo DVD: semplicemente incredibile!!!
L'ho visto seduta in poltrona insiema a Debbie, la mia padrona di casa, e non abbiamo mai smesso di esclamare dei grandi ohhhh e ahhh e nooo e wow!!! E' uno spettacolo emozionante, con orsi, lontre e correnti di marea che deviano dalla rotta prestabilita! Da vedere e rivedere!
C'è un momento che non potrò mai più dimenticare, quanto la zip posteriore della muta stagna di Sarah si rompe proprio durante una delle numerose 'soste-pipì' nel bel mezzo dell'oceano! Ieri Justine mi ha mostrato come zatteravano i kayak (in mare mosso, of course!) e tutta l'operazione di equilibrio e destrezza mi ha molto impressionato!
La quarta di copertina del DVD propone una sintesi perfetta dell'avventura: "Nessuno ha mai pagaiato in kayak con successo lungo le remote e ventose Isole Aleutine, tra la Russia e l'Alaska. L'esploratrice Justine Curgenven e Sarah Outen hanno pagaiato 2,500 chilometri lungo l'arcipelago affrontando più di 20 lunghe traversate tra le piccole e disabitate isole. Sara ha affrontato una sfida ancora maggiore, essendo questa una parte del suo viaggio intorno al mondo con la sola "energia umana" ed avendo una limitata esperienza in kayak. Sole per 101 giorni in uno dei luoghi più inospitali della terra, le due donne sono state trasportate lontano dalla terra ferma da correnti sconosciute, martellate da mari impetuosi e avvicinate da orsi bruni; durante un viaggio eccezionalmente eccitante, hanno sperimentato una rara conoscenza di se stesse, della natura selvaggia e dei pochi abitanti di questa terra dura e bella".
Il filmato completo dura 70 minuti ma il DVD contiene anche la versione ridotta di 55 per i festival, oltre a quattro filmati più brevi sulle evoluzioni degli Hurrican Riders e sulle zone di surf a Tofino. Un filmato che da solo vale l'acquisto è "Strait Flush", girato nel dicembre 2013 nel Menai Strait di Anglesey, quando soffiava un 'venticello gentile' forza 8-10! Unbeliveable, grida Justine!
Unbeliveable è anche tutto il racconto della lunga traversata delle Isole Aleutine! Incredibile davvero!
