Last week in Anglesey

E ho finalmente rivisto i puffin!!!)

The unique lighthouse on the Skerries...
She seems to like the green...
... and paddle as well.
Mark running a 4* training...
Always something new to learn and practise!
Radio exercises during the VHF course..
Barbie kayak... I've never paddled a kayak with this really strange coloured...
What a gorgeous paddling day!!!
South Stack in its magnificient!!!
When something is nearly to finished, it means that something else is ready to start!
I spent my last week in North Wales doing lots of different and interesting activities, as usual when I spend my time paddling!
I started visiting my last land-lady for a couple of completely relaxing days (and Debbie was so kind to lend me her second plastic green kayak!) Then I join Axel and his group to paddle the Skerries, in a wonderful sunny day full of curious encounters (sterns just arrived on the island and I finally saw again some beautiful puffins!).
I also had the chance to observe Mark running a 4* training for two students and was very useful for me to run a short session about towing and rescueing along the rocky coastline between Church Bay and Carmel Head.
Last Friday I finally drove South to Pwllheli for my VHF course (pre-requisite for the Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning provider logbook... my next little adventure into the BCU universe!). Course and final assessment were really fantastic: Foxtrot-Alpha-November-Tango-Alpha-Sierra-Tango-India-Charley!
Yesterday I celebrated my last week in Anglesey with a gorgeous paddling from Port Dafarch to Parliament Cove, paddling with Axel in a very warm and sunny day, and in a very pinky kayak (thanks to Phil for lending me the Barbie kayak!).
If there is any correspondence between colours and soul, I'm feeling exactly as the colours of the last two kayaks I paddled: excited, positive and looking forward to the future (green), happy, fragile and careness (pink)... and with a big big big desire to come back home!!!

Level 3 Coach assessment...

È già in programma!

Tatiana, Trenk, Eva-Lotta
It was one of the most difficult, interesting and challenging experience of my paddling life. I don't remember to have been as much stressed as I was untill the last Saturday, May 9th. I wasn't so nervous neither for my 5* sea Leader or for my Level 2 Coach assessment (to say the true, nor for my university degree, almost 20 years ago!) My Level 3 Coach assessment was truly more than that!
I was not alone! I was so lucky to share this strong and deep experience with two very good friends of mine, two special people indeed, Eva-Lotta from Finland and Trenk from Germany.
We spent together all the free moments during the Anglesey Symposium, talking about assessment plan, individualisation, progression and linking sessions... We were little bit more relaxed once we finally gave our portfolios to the assessors, Lee Pooley and Sid Sinfield, one week before the assessment. But I became more and more stressed once my friends came back from their assessment days with no smiling faces. They didn't pass their assessment, and I didn't pass mine as well, unfortunately!
"Good Level 3 Coach behavioyrs, but not consistent", they said to me at the end of my assessment day.
Well, I didn't pass this time. I will do it better next time, probably.
I lost my mentor few weeks before the assessment and I couldn't put in action what I observed during the two months I spent in Wales last winter. I now desperately need to have one more mentoring day at least! I'm already planning it!
The assessment day was a perfect training indeed. I learnt lot of new interesting things and I received lot of feedbacks from the assessors. I'm looking forward for a new assessment day: I really hope to become a competent Level 3 Coach :-) I am endless thankful to all those coaches who helped me during this long-term development process, giving me suggestions and feedback, working with me on the water or simply talking with me at the evening meeting into the pub, analizing the 'dark side' of the "individualisation of student's need" in between a glass of juice and a second glass of rum (I still don't like drinking beer!).

Anglesey Symposium 2015: an invaluable week!

Anglesey Outdoor Centre: ready to start!
Coach meeting in the 'coach house'
Saturday May 2nd, a rainy chilly day for the rolling&rescue session...
Unforgettable evenings at the Paddlers Return pub...
Ferry gliding in the Menai Strait...
A crowded slipway at Menai Bridge...
Coastal navigation and tidal planning in the main room...
The 4* training group ready to launch at Treardurr Bay...
De-brieging and action plan after the second day of the 4* training...
Sunny lunch break at Roscolyn...
Check the leader's equipment during the 4* assessment...
Rainy lunch stop on a rocky beach...
Happy new friends!
What a week!
Full of paddling activities, sessions, meetings, friends, problems&solutions, chats, laughs, drinks and games, either on the water and on the land!
The Anglesey Symposium is always a special one, every year better that the year before. This time was pretty wet, rainy days during the entire week (except for Wednesday!) and lot of mud everywhere. The tent I shared with Trenk was very good, the only disadvantage was going out every morning under the heavy rain!
However, I had lot of paddling fun, coaching the rolling&rescue session, assisting the tidal race session in the Menai Strait, observing the coastal navigation and tidal planning course, co-delivering the 4* training and assessment, helping the Italians with the translation (expecially for their night navigation as mock-students in the 5* assessment!), partecipating in the evening presentations about amazing sea kayak expeditions all around the world (Greenland, Tasmania, Alaska, Bahamas and more!) It was a week full of worderful experiences! Invaluable indeed!

... a little of everything!

Tutto risolto.
Ameno adesso siamo tutti in kayak!
Ed abbiamo ripreso a ridere di gusto!!! :-)

Trys showing session plan...
Trys showing exercises about fundamentals...
Trys coaching now to coach!
Stay tuned!

Well, last week was an avventure!
The fly company didn't allow me to leave the country because of my old Identità Card (still valid, just bit used). I so had to posponed the flight three days later to have time enough to renew the I.C.
I then flew to Birmingham, Phil Hadley was so kind to picked me up at the airport and drive to his house in Dudley (I left my car in his garage last month).
I supposed to started driving at midnight, and I did, BUT half an hour later I had to stop: a hall in the weel!
Then I slept into the car, waited for the morning after to chance the weel...
Eva-Lotta and Trenk were waiting for me in Anglesey and I arrived in late (more in late then ever!), BUT just in time to jump in the Moderate Water Endorsement training with Trys Mortis (thanks to a kayak offered by Pete Baars of Summit to sea!).
Next step is the Anglesey Symposium and the fully BCU week immediately after, so lots of excitement is coming!
Eva-Lotta, Trenk and I sorted out (almost) all the problems we had and we're now waiting for new adventures on the water. We are finally together again and we're closer friends: that's the best thing we had!
Life is an avventure, I just realized that we usually are good problem solving specialists in our daily life :-)

Vital chaos

Stay tuned!

Papers everywhere: I really prefer to be on the water!
Packing, un-packing, re-packing: that's my main task in this period!
I'm leaving again.
I loved my 10 weeks experience in Wales so much that I decided to come back there!
I have a flight this evening, if I will be able to put in order the chaos I create at home...
I will meet Phil Hadley in Birmingham, then Trenk Muller in Holyhead: we will share a tent at the Anglesey Outdoors for the next three weeks, so I really hope to have good weather this time!
Next week I will be on the water with Trys Morris and Eva-Lotta Backman: we're looking forward to complete our portfolio in time for the Level 3 Coach assessment (since I've realized that it's the old Level 5 Coach, well... I got bit worried... last time I felt so stressed was at the time of my master work, almost 20 years ago!!!). Well, let see what happen: fingers crossed!
In between I will join the Anglesey Symposium: I come back there since 2009 and every year is always (always!) a better experience! I have some more courses already scheduled, so I can imporve my little "collection" (as someone said...) of international award and certificates...

This time I don't have a lap-top with me, Mauro will update the blog! Stay tuned!

My last week in England... for the moment!

My experience in North Wales and England is nearly to finish.
I've spent the first week (so far!) in the Trys Morris' house in Deiniolen. As in a mirror game, I'm spending now my last week in the Phil Hadley's house in Dudlye.
I came here for a two days First Aid course (pre-requisite for the Level 3 Coach assessment!), than I went with him to Southampton for a Moderate Water Endorsement assessement day and finally I spent some time visiting England...

This afternoon we will fly together to Barcelona to partecipate in the Pagaia Symposium: it means that an adventure is just finished and a new one is starting! Life is good!

Phil Hadley showing a first aid bandage...
Australian CPR Ezy: very interesting instrument!
Two penny coin into the rocks... what a lucky man!|
Old Harry Rocks: what a wonderful place!
A perfect line of white sea stacks 'till the Island of Wight!
At some point started snowing and hailing (!!!)
Very special pebbles on the low tide beach at Old Harry Rocks
Woodhenge: historical site with wooden columns built for still unknown reason...
Avebury: the biggest stone circle in the world, 500 years older than Stonehenge!
Thank you so much, Phil, for this bright funny picture!
Life is good!

The paddle that grew and grew...

"Do you want to go paddling next Sunday?" Asked me Debbie last week.
"Yes, of course!" I immediately answered.
Debbie is the happy owner of the Clogwyn Lodge, she was my wonderful landlady for the last two months and she is a good sea kayaker too. But we dind't had any chance to paddled together since I arrived in Wales so... I was very excited with her plan!
The day after Debbie received a call from her buddy paddler who was inerested in coming with us... so we became three. When we went to the pool session last Monday night, Debbie had a short chat with a friend of her, interested as weel... and we became four paddlers. She probably wrote the message on the Snowdonian Canoe Club forum and... we finally were 15 people on the Abersoch beach yesterday!
Debbie said it was the paddle that grew and gre, I said she was the unconscious leader! The Snowdonian Canoe Club is well known for being a predominatly female club: we were 12 women and just 3 men on the water... what a great company!

Debbie led the briefing with the big group of 12 women and just 3 men...
15 sea kayaks on the sunny beach at the lunch time...
The group playing cricket to warm up before launching to come back...
The big smile of Debbie at the end of the sunny spectacular pladding day...
I won two unexpected lovely prizes as best lodger!!! Thanks sooooooo much, Debbie, I miss you!

Paddling the Stakcs, the Skerries and Bardsey Island!

Three fantastic days paddling for pleasure in such a good company! WOW!
The first days, last Wednesday, I went with Neil McAra and Phil Smiths around North and South Stacks and we enjoied the sunny day, the long lunch break and the rokhopping on the way back...
The second day we become four paddlers as Jan Albin met us at the Cemplyn west car park. We then managed a perfect transit to the Skerries using the cardinal marks on the way on and the Platters islets and the West Mouse island on the way back. Was a slightly foggy day and quite often I had the feeling to paddle on the sky! The relaxed lunch time under the lighthose was really gorgeous!
The third day, yesterday Friday March 20th, we were five, with the Greek Manolis with all of us. We drove south to Aberdaron to paddle around the Bardsey Island. I've never been there before and I was bit thrilling about the crossings with such large tide flows. It was an absolutely amazing trip, exactly at the solar eclipse time, with lots of razorbills flying all around the kayaks, some seals and one porpoise too!
I couldn't ask for a better ending of my long experience here in North Wales!

The man of many talents Neil!
Neil & Phil practising rollings and rescues on the little tidal on South Stack...
They practised sooooo much, 'till the sunset!
The Furlong green buoy just out of Cemlyn Bay on the second day,..
Neil at the South Cardinal Mark...
Platters at low tide with the Skerries on the horizon...
The West Mouse has a white beacon like a master pawn chess piece...
Jan under the solar eclipse yesterday Friday, March 20th...
The square lighthouse on the background of the Bardsey Island...
The best end of three perfect days at the marina cafè in Aberdaron!
Sono stati tre giorni fantastici, trascorsi in ottima compagnia, pagaiando in posti bellissimi! WOW!
