This is the roll!

E' arrivato subito, appena l'abbiamo ordinato!

It is immediately arrived, as soon as we sent the order!
Since then, however, it was some time before we were able to write this post...
The new video realized by Justine Curgenven with Cheri Perry & Turner Wilson is a really good show: full, rich, instructive and, above all, very amusing!
The subtitle on the back of the DVD explains that "from the multiple award-winning filmaker who brought you This is the Sea comes the most comprehensive DVD yet on learning the kayak roll". We are completely agree with it: after the DVD realized last year by Helen Wilson and the more recent with Maligiaq & Dubside, this new DVD made by Justine is aimed both to the aspirant and experienced rollers, as well as to the coaches. This one seems to be the first video thought and realized both for the students and the teachers: Cheri & Turner help us with lots of troubleshooting sections, very useful to help other instructors to understand the mistake of the students and than correct the body position or the kayak rotation.
This is an essential DVD for the film library of each kayaker... And said that, the post could end here... but there are some more things that is important to said...
The DVD is two hours and half long, filmed in high-resolution and edited with great attention: good images, clear waters, engaging sceneries and it is quite easy to pick out Canada, Scotland and our beloved Vulcano in the Aeolian Islands - Sicily. Big part of the film was realized there, with the Greenland kayak called "Spirit Inuit", made by the Italian Overline, with brighth and original colours.
The DVD is rich with explanations about three rolls, the standard Greenland roll, the reverse sweep roll and the storm roll. Cheri & Turner use both the Greenland paddle and the euroblade, explainign the differences or the peculiarities for every single maneuver.
The DVD is full of annotations and if it was a book it would be full of footnotes: Cheri Turner explain and show every movement, they focus the attention on few keywords and above all they decompose the roll in so many small forward steps: from different anglings, in different conditions, from the flat water to the big waves, on both sides.
The DVD is interesting for the troubleshooting sections: for each roll Cheri & Turner introduce both the fault (who knows why we all made the same fault!) and the resolution (some really clever and illuminating in their simplicity). The two great coaches reveal all the secrets of the roll: be relaxed, enjoy your time, practise on both sides.
The DVD is amusing because the credits flow on the slips of the protagonists, sometimes clearly embarrassed (because they're true!) and often visibly lost behind the "script". It is important to wait until the end, go over the thanks and the sponsors, to hear Justine repeats the mantra of the DVD, the sentence used by Turner to close every session: "Move the kayak first, head out of the water last"... and what more? among the thousand beads of the end you can also hear the inimitable and incomparable laugh of the main director of CuckleTV!
The DVD is easy to consult, with a long and articulated menu: it might take o lot of evenings. There are special sessions about balance brace and sculling for support, extra sessions about the equipment (kayak, paddle, clothing and paddle-floats) and about stretching for paddling and rolling (both yoga and stretching exercises). Above all, it has Italian, French and Spanish subtitles, realized for the first two languages by our Gianfranco Liotta. He uses couple of times the word "eskimo", politically uncorrect and usually replaced with "roll": thanks to these small mistakes we can better appreciated the respectful translation towards the Inuit people...
Latin languages, unfortunately, doesn't have a word to say "eskimo" in a different way and also in this post I have used the ancient word, modulated by the first european explorers and adopted by the vast community of Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese paddlers (and perhaps also Albanian and Romanian)... it doesn't have any negative, pejorative or racist meaning but thanks to Justine we have a good opportunity to still reflect on the topic: it is always very difficult to introduce or replace a word in a common language but maybe we can start to use a new, foreign and completely neutral word: ROLL! Above all, also the word "kayak" was not an Italian word...
This new film edited by Justine explains well the ROLL, how learn to ROLL and how improve the proper ROLL! So, now... jump all into the water and practise the ROLL!!!
